**Uncensored**, an original encode from DVD source. I had this set up to encode last year in terms of filtering scripts and so on, but never got around to hitting "go" so I just did that. I was going to restyle/redo the subtitles but have not. The official subs here are pretty bad, with inconsistent timing with a lot of blinks and bleeds, the usual crappy conventions of the era like ellipses on every other line and stutters of the "P, please..." style, and lots of terrible lines, grammatical mistakes and irregularities, etc. It would actually take some effort to fix. If you want the subs, I can link them.
This encode is a bit tough as for some reason the DVD has a lot of ugly noise, obvious compression artifacts around strong lines, and ringing, even though it's unsharp and out of focus. Somebody else might balance all of the above issues differently, for example less aggressively with respect to reducing noise and ringing than I did in part to retain some more of the occasional background wood grain and the likes, though I still left in a little bit of both. Regardless, compared to KH's ancient encode this retains a whole lot more detail, is sharper, is less aliased, and has less ringing, all at lower bitrate. Compared to the 720p upscale that's floating around, which is considerably better than KH's video, it retains some lines and details better (though not quite always, owing to how AA was done), mostly from spending more bits and different processing, while being a bit less sharpened and line thinned—it's not distasteful but it goes further than I would, and I wasn't shy about it. I also tried to address some of the chroma misalignment and blocking, unlike the others, and smoothed out the incredibly mangled scrolling white-on-black credits.
The first episode gets remuxed 192 kbps AC-3 audio, while eps 2-3 have PCM (.wav) on disc that has been compressed before at some point, so that is recompressed to AAC here to save space. Even qaac Q127 (VBR setting that gets ~320 kbps on audio CDs) results in these sub-150 kbps bitrates.
Episode 1 - Video: 852x480 @ 29.97 fps HEVC Main 10 (~924 kbps), Audio: Japanese stereo AC-3 (192 kbps, DVD remux)
Episode 2 - Video: 852x480 @ 29.97 fps HEVC Main 10 (~936 kbps), Audio: Japanese stereo AAC (~144 kbps)
Episode 3 - Video: 852x480 @ 29.97 fps HEVC Main 10 (~928 kbps), Audio: Japanese stereo AAC (~144 kbps)
